June - Bay Leaf

The table is booked!  We’re going to Bay Leaf, Grayshott, again in June.  Our meeting is on Tuesday 13th.

Aperitifs will be at the Fox and Pelican (front bar) from about 7 pm and then dinner is at 8.

Please let me know as soon as possible whether you expect to be there, either using the feedback page of the web site or in answer to this meeting notice e-mail.  To make sure we book enough places, please respond as early as possible, ideally by 8 p.m. on Sunday 11th.  Looking forward to a great evening!

Sad news

We heard through Petersfield Rugby Club that Malcolm Godden died last week.  He was one of the Curry Club originals - he rarely missed a meeting until he suffered a stroke at home about ten years ago.  After that, he and Jo still made huge efforts to attend.  We soon learnt which venues were wheelchair-friendly - sadly many weren't.  We'll raise a glass to his memory at our September meeting.

Curry Club at Bay Leaf in April

April Meeting: Wed 13th, 7:30 pm

The table is booked!  We’re going to Bay Leaf again this month by popular request after a very successful and well attended March meeting at Malabon in Petersfield.

Aperitifs will be at the Fox and Pelican (front bar) from about 6:30 pm and then dinner is at 7:30.  Please note - earlier time!

We always enjoy ourselves at the Bay Leaf and in February, Bishnu laid on some off-menu treats. For many members, it's the favourite venue.  Here's another great opportunity for you to invite a friend or partner meet our Curry Club as we get going after a long break.

Please let me know as soon as possible whether you expect to be there, either using the feedback page of the web site or in answer to the meeting notice e-mail sent to members of our mailing list.  To make sure we book enough places, please respond as early as possible, ideally by 8 p.m. on Monday 11th.  Looking forward to a great evening!

Bay Leaf in May!

The table is booked!  By popular request, we return to the Bay Leaf in Grayshott on Tuesday 8th May.  Aperitifs will be at the Fox and Pelican from about 19:30;  dinner is booked for 20:30.

This is always a popular venue, and Bishnu plans a 'surprise'!  His surprises have always been pleasant ones, so it's essential that we let him know how many to expect.  Please use the feedback page on the web site or reply a.s.a.p. to the e-mail that will be sent out today to members to let us know if you plan to be there.  It's a Bank Holiday on Monday so you may have less time than you thought, if you're planning to leave it to the last minute to decide.

Of course, the first weekend in May is also the date for the Petersfield Pub 7s.  I hope there's some decent weather and the Rugby Club's end-of-season party goes well.  But if not, Tuesday should be a great evening.  Hope to see you there.

Loads of parking in Grayshott - at the pub, a car park near the restaurant and the pub, and a car park on Crossways Road too.

Bay Leaf again in September

By popular demand, we're back in Grayshott in September to visit the Bayleaf.  We had such a good evening in June that the overall feeling was that we should go again as soon as possible.  The chatpat starter was new to us all, and we've been promised another treat this time.

Our meeting is on Tuesday 12th.  We'll meet as usual at the Fox and Pelican for aperitifs from about 19:30 and then dinner is booked for 20:30.  Please sign up using the form on our web site or mail back in answer to the e-mail notice sent to members.  It's helpful to know as soon as possible, please, whether you expect to make it.  Looking forward to a great evening, interesting and tasty food, and some good fun.

Looking forward to a great evening!

Directions: Parking is easy in Grayshott - the Headley Road car park, the pub and the restaurant are all within 100 yards of each other.

Bay Leaf - Tuesday 13th June!

By popular demand, we're back in Grayshott in June to visit the Bayleaf.  The table is booked, in fact it has been for over two weeks.  Some of our Friday 'early beers' crowd arrived rather late in the evening for late beers and a curry.  The food was excellent, one beer would have been enough, and my head was a little sore the next day.

We'll meet as usual at the Fox and Pelican for aperitifs from about 19:30 and then dinner is booked for 20:30.  Please sign up using the form on our web site or mail back in answer to the e-mail notice that will be sent to members.  Looking forward to a great evening, interesting and tasty food, and some good fun.

July: meeting on Wednesday 12th - the plan is to return to the Paradise Balti in sunny Petersfield.

Directions: Parking is easy in Grayshott - the Headley Road car park, the pub and the restaurant are all within 100 yards of each other. I wish it was so easy to embed a Google map in a Google (Blogger) posting but this seems to keep switching to one of the local estate agents.  I'm not sure whether this is aggressive marketing or bad technology but either way, it's a pain in the backside.

Bay Leaf - a most enjoyable evening

We chose Bay Leaf for our Curry Club meeting in August and arrived to find the place full apart from the table we'd reserved for 14 (though in the end only 12 of us made it due to a problem at air traffic control). As usual we asked the restaurant to make the choices for us; they did extremely well, featuring some times that were new to their regular menu along with some favourites.

A mixed starter included vegetable samosas, chicken tikka and mushroom kauchari (garlic crisp fried mushroom). Main courses were lamb garlic chilli masala, chilli chicken and Lawsuni Rawas (salmon cooked in the tandoor and then a thick tomato-y spicy sauce), accompanied by various dhals, rice and naans, along with an aubergine bhaji.

Little was left - no doggy bags tonight - and the verdict of our members was "excellent food, great service considering the restaurant was so busy". We paid £28 a head including tip, and the drinks part of that was over £10 a head. So really good value too. A most enjoyable evening.

This review was originally posted on Trip Advisor, while watching Rugby 7s in the Olympic Games.  Re-posting it here has given me an opportunity to iron out the auto-correct whoopsies.

August meeting - Bayleaf, Grayshott - Wed 10th

The table is booked!  August's Curry Club venue is the Bay Leaf restaurant, Grayshott, on Wednesday 10th August.  We'll meet at the Fox and Pelican (front bar) for a gentle aperitif from about 19:30 and then it's a short walk to the restaurant, where dinner will be at 20:30.

Since some people may be away for summer holidays, we need to be careful to let the restaurant know just how many to expect.  Please try and let me know as soon as possible whether you expect to make it.  You can use the feedback page on the web site or alternately send an answer to the e-mail notice which will be going out to members shortly.

There's lots of parking at the pub or in the Headley Road car park just behind the bus stop opposite the restaurant (see map below).

This is one of my favourites, not just because it's near to home, but because they do a superb chilli chicken dish which is extremely tasty without causing pain.  Looking forward a great evening!

Grayshott - Tuesday 8th September

As we leave behind the rains of August, I'm hoping that September will give us some decent weather for the opening of the Rugby World Cup which all kicks off at Twickenham on Friday 18th with the hosts playing against Fiji.

Our meeting this month will be in Grayshott on Tuesday 8th, with dinner at the slightly earlier time of 20:00.  The table is booked at the Bay Leaf which offers some delicious and interesting Indian and Nepali variations, including a chilli chicken stir fry which is one of my favourites when we go there after Friday night beers.  Aperitifs will be at the Fox and Pelican (Fullers) from about 19:00.

Please let me know if you expect to be there, using either the feedback page on the web site or by reply to the members' e-mail.   Looking forward to a great evening!

May meeting - Bay Leaf, Grayshott - Wed 14th

The table is booked!  On Wednesday 14th, we'll be visiting the excellent Bay Leaf restaurant in Grayshott.  Aperitifs will be just over the road at the Fox and Pelican from 19:30 and then dinner is ordered for 20:30 precisely.

I've taken on board the comments about late evenings.  Some members suggested that we start earlier, but that squeezes the meet-up and the chance for everyone to have a chat before dinner.   The big problem at some restaurants seems to be slow service and a lack of preparedness, even though they were briefed and were well staffed.  There was one recently where we didn't have the main course until well  after 21:30, by which time it was all beginning to seem a fairly bad idea to be there.

The plan from here on is that we will ask each restaurant to be ready to serve a starter within 15-20 minutes of arrival and main courses within 35-40, which means that we should usually be finished by 22:00 - 22:15.   I hope that's early enough for our members and that we can make sure that restaurants fit with this timetable.

Clearly, we can help the restaurants by getting our numbers right, so please let me know if you expect to be there or not be there.    Please reply to the e-mail that goes to our mailing list or sign up through our web site feedback page.

Looking forward to a great evening on Wednesday 14th.

PS: for those that are driving, there's plenty of parking opposite the restaurant at Headley Road car park, and next to the pub:

Bay Leaf - June meeting report

This should be flaming June, but in fact it was a filthy rain- and wind-swept evening more like October. In the circumstances, and maybe driving up from Petersfield on such a bad night wasn't an attractive idea, fewer members showed up than expected. However, the gallant few that braved the weather were rewarded with some really good food.

Starters were very tasty and varied: fish pakora, lamb pakora, chicken sadeko* - seemed like spicy chicken with a little soy in the marinade - and momo lamb, served with plenty of salad and some interesting dips, from mild to hot. After that, the main courses were a great selection: chicken jalfrezi, lamb pathia and a chicken special curry were served first. These were accompanied by naans: keema, garlic and a Bay Leaf special. Vegetable dishes were a channa (chick pea) massala, black dahl and sag paneer, together with Bay Leaf's special rice. Then the centrepiece of the meal was - if I've spelled it right - lamb massala bharta, lamb leg steaks cooked in a rich tomato and onion sauce. Really delicious, and not on the regular menu, so this was a real treat. We did our best, but they'd clearly cooked for a few more than arrived. Where's Will Parkes when you need him?

All in all, it was a very enjoyable evening for those that made it, rewarded with delicious food, beautifully presented and well served. Keep korma and curry on!

June meeting - Wed 12th - Grayshott - Bay Leaf

The table is booked! The Bay Leaf offers an interesting mix of classic Indian and Nepali food.  Several times recently, deciding to go for a curry after a little liquid refreshment or a Rugby match (or both), I've tried some of their 'street food' dishes - hot, delicious, just the thing to enjoy with another beer.

When we last met in Grayshott, Bay Leaf was still in its original very small premises in Headley Road. They moved at the end of May last year, and the new place, in Crossways Road, very close to the pub, is much more spacious and comfortable; many people will know it as the site of the former Kappadokya grill restaurant.

Our meeting is on Wednesday 12th, with aperitifs at the Fox and Pelican from about 19:30, and then a very short walk to Bay Leaf for dinner at 20:30. And anyone with the stamina is welcome to visit Grayshott Social Club for an after-dinner pint.

The usual thing - please let us know whether you can make it, either by e-mail in reply to the meeting notice that's sent to all members, or through the feedback page of our web site.

Looking forward to a great evening - see you on the 12th!

Bay Leaf - Grayshott

Wednesday 14th November was a fine day, with glorious autumn sunshine, and we had plenty of mellow heat that evening when we visited the Bay Leaf in Grayshott.

After an enjoyable couple of pints in the Fox and Pelican, we made the short walk to the other side of the village green and a warm welcome from Bishnu and the team. A delicious mixed starter comprised onion pakora, sheek kebab, chicken tikka and lamb sikora. Everything was very tasty, and enough to whet the appetite for the main courses.

We enjoyed lamb madras, rogan josh, chicken pathia, and a chicken chilli stir fry that had a touch of Chinese about it. Sag paneer, tarka dhal, various naans and rice made perfect accompaniments, and the overall result was a really excellent meal, a good balance of medium and hot, but nothing too much to be thoroughly enjoyable. One of our stalwarts remarked that this was on a par with Madhuban, as good a Curry Club meal as he'd ever had, and that's a pretty fair summary.

We decided that as the December meeting (Wed 12th) is to be held at Spice Lounge, we'd go to the Old Square Brewery for aperitifs. We plan to book at Madhuban for the January meeting.

Talking of Madhuban, we hear that the restaurant has been included in the prestigious Michelin Guide for 2013. Congratulations to them!

Christmas is coming, and members that are planning to shop on Amazon are requested please to enter via the Amazon shopfront on our website. Buying through here gives a small kickback for the beer kitty! I'll put up some recommendations including books about Indian food that could make very acceptable gifts for Christmas.

November meeting - Bay Leaf, Grayshott

The table is booked! We're out of Petersfield for the November meeting, on Wednesday 14th, at Bay Leaf in Grayshott. We visited in early May when it was still located in its old premises near the Fire Station. The business moved towards the end of May and is going very well in the new location, much nearer the Fox & Pelican, which is our rendezvous for aperitifs.

Essential information: aperitifs from about 19:30, and then dinner at 20:30. Please reply by e-mail or use the feedback page of our web site to say whether you'll be there or not. The F&P has Bengal Lancer on draught at the moment, and as well as being great beer, it seems a very apt start to a Curry Club evening.

Bay Leaf impressed us with the quality and presentation of its food at our last visit (review here) and I'm sure they'll aim to do just the same this time, promising a very good evening.

Two other notices:

1. As we run up to Christmas, a reminder about our Amazon shop. Amazon has a massive choice of books, music, films, electronics, and kitchen gear. This can give us a contribution to the beer kitty, so it's worth using. Here's the link!

2. As previously mentioned, the December meeting will be in Petersfield.

Bay Leaf - Grayshott - 9th May

It was a quiet night in Grayshott, probably due to the torrential rain that had persisted since the morning, so the Fox and Pelican was fairly empty even before we walked up to the restaurant.  Bay Leaf had planned to move to its new premises on 6th May, but various hold-ups in the project meant that the change was delayed until later in the month.

Bay Leaf has always impressed with the beautiful way that it presents the food, and the starter this evening was no exception; it included a spicy poppadum with prawns in the puree style, momo (steamed dumplings), pakora, and sekuwa, peppered and barbecued lamb.

The main courses were chosen for us by the restaurant:  the sauced dishes were garlic chilli chicken, very lively but not over-heavy on the garlic, chicken pathia, lamb madras and lamb balti.  We also enjoyed lamb shashlick and tikka chicken - again, beautifully presented.  Side dishes were tarka dhal, channa massala, saag paneer, plain and pilau rice, plain and garlic naan.

Overall, we had a very enjoyable evening, well looked after by the Bay Leaf staff, who made us more than welcome.  As a footnote, the move the new premises was made on 20th May; the picture shows the celebration archway of balloons around the door of the new premises, the former Kapadokya grill restaurant.  The plan for the old restaurant is Italian plus steak, so it looks as though there should be another interesting addition to the Grayshott food scene very soon.

Our plan for 13th June is another visit to the Madhuban in Liss, preceded by aperitifs at the Spreadeagle.    We'll decide the programme for July - August then.

Bay Leaf, Grayshott - 9th May

The table is booked! Our venue for May is the new Bay Leaf in Grayshott. Bay Leaf has been operating in Grayshott since October 2009, and has gained a reputation for delicious and beautifully-presented Indian and Nepalese food. Here's a review from 2010.

It moves to new, larger, premises at 2 Crossways Road on Sunday 6th May. This is the location of the former Kapadokya grill restaurant, which closed in January. Aperitifs will be at the Fox and Pelican, in the centre of the village, and just about 100 yards from the Bay Leaf. I've booked for 12 people, but there's room for more. Please e-mail or use the feedback form on the web site to confirm attendance.

[Update, 9th May]  We now hear that the new premises won't be ready until 20th May.  So we'll go to the original place after all.

Looking forward to a great evening, see you on the 9th!

Bay Leaf, Grayshott

After a journey down to Dorset last Friday, we got back to Grayshott at nearly 10 p.m.  Bay Leaf had a table available and we were in by 10 past.  We enjoyed a delicious supper;  mains were lamb piro-piro, a spicy dish with sauce similar to jalfrezi, and a beautifully-presented chicken shashlik, with bindi bhaji on the side.  This tasted fantastic - the okra were cut into short lengths and cooked with a little tomato, giving a very light sauce, allowing some crunch in the vegetables.  Best I've had since eating a few years ago at the Old India in Bristol.  The service was friendly and though it was late in the evening, the atmosphere was good.

The menu is more varied and less purist Nepali than Gurkha Durbar, which people travel miles to visit.  It's also a very small restaurant, and sometimes booking will be vital.  None of this is bad news, it's just a different experience.  Bay Leaf is a place I'll look forward to visiting again.
